The “What” and “Why” of Striving for Achievement: A New Approach in Achievement Motivation

Have you ever thought about your achievement goals at the workplace, when exercising or even during familiar tasks such as cooking? What are you striving for? And more importantly, why are you striving for this?

In the domain of education, interviews with students have shown that their achievement goals can be endorsed for different reasons. While one student endorses the goal to learn as much as possible about a specific topic in order to please his or her parents, another student can endorse the very same goal because the topic is interesting for him or her.  The different reasons underlying the endorsement of achievement goals seem to be an important aspect of striving that, together with the achievement goal, can qualify the quality of achievement motivation. In my talk, I will present findings of my research related to personal and contextual factors that lead achievers to adopt a particular achievement goal along with the reason why they adopted the goal. I will also present findings about achievers’ outcomes when particular achievement goals are endorsed for different reasons.
